Bleeding between periods
When bleeding happens outside your normal cycle
Bleeding between periods — also called intermenstrual bleeding (IMB) or spotting — is common, but it is not something that should be ignored, especially if it is new, persistent, or becoming heavier.
In many cases the cause is simple and treatable, but it’s important to find out what is driving the bleeding.
What causes bleeding between periods
Common causes include:
Endometrial polyps
Infection of inflammation
Hormonal imbalance
Changes related to contraception
Changes around perimenopause
Identifying the cause allows treatment to be targeted rather than based on trial and error.
How bleeding is assessed
Assessment usually involves a careful discussion about your cycle, hormonal treatments, and the pattern of bleeding.
This is often followed by pelvic ultrasound to assess the uterus and ovaries. If there is concern about the uterine lining, or if a polyp is suspected, a hysteroscopy may be recommended to look directly inside the uterine cavity and to treat the problem.
My training in advanced pelvic ultrasound (ASUM DDU) helps ensure subtle causes of bleeding are not missed and to avoid unnecessary surgeries.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include:
Reassurance
Adjusting or changing hormonal treatments
Medication
Hysteroscopy to remove polyps or fibroids
Further investigation or surgery if needed
We will discuss your options clearly so you can decide what feels right for you.
How I can help
I combine advanced pelvic ultrasound and hysteroscopy with careful assessment to identify the cause of abnormal bleeding and guide appropriate treatment.
The aim is always to stop the bleeding, address the cause, and help you feel confident in your care.
